Type “best plumber in Minneapolis” into ChatGPT and it will name two or three companies with a sentence of reasoning for each. The same happens in Gemini, Perplexity and, increasingly, at the top of Google itself in AI Overviews. For a service business this is a new front door, and most local companies have not noticed it is open. Here is how these systems decide who to recommend, and what you can do about it.
What AI assistants actually look at
Large language models do not crawl your website live and rank it. They synthesize an answer from sources they trust, retrieved at the moment of the question. For local questions those sources are, in rough order of influence: Google Business Profile data and reviews, well-structured websites with clear schema markup, review platforms and directories, local news and association listings, and plain-language content that answers the question directly.
Three things get a business skipped: inconsistent facts (a different phone number on Yelp than on your site), thin pages that do not say what you do or where, and a reputation the model cannot find evidence for.
Seven fixes, in order
1. Make every fact match everywhere
Name, address, phone, hours, services and service area must be identical on your website, Google Business Profile, Apple Maps, Bing, Yelp, Facebook and every directory. Models weight consistency heavily because it is a proxy for legitimacy.
2. Add complete schema markup
Organization or LocalBusiness schema with your services, area served, hours and reviews, plus Service and FAQ schema on the relevant pages. This is the structured layer AI systems read most easily. Most WordPress sites have only the bare minimum.
3. Write answer-first pages
Rewrite the top of each service page so it can be quoted directly: what the service is, who it is for, where you offer it, what it typically costs and what guarantees you provide. Models prefer sentences they can lift without editing.
4. Answer real questions in plain language
Publish FAQ sections and short articles that answer the questions your customers ask, in the words they use. “How much does a furnace replacement cost in Minneapolis” beats “Our HVAC solutions” every time.
5. Keep reviews recent and specific
Models summarize review sentiment. A steady flow of recent reviews that mention the service and the city gives them something to say about you. Respond to all of them.
6. Earn mentions from sources models trust
Local press, trade association directories, manufacturer partner pages, community sponsorships and chamber listings. These function for AI the way backlinks function for Google.
7. Measure it monthly
Build a list of 25 to 50 prompts your customers might ask and run them across the major assistants each month. Track whether you appear, what is said and who is named instead. Without this you are guessing.
How long it takes
Consistency and schema fixes can change what assistants say within 60 to 90 days. Building the authority that earns you the top recommendation is a six-to-twelve-month effort, and it compounds with the local SEO work you should be doing anyway.
